Frequently Asked Questions
Can you go straight to an orthodontist?
Yes, you can go straight to an orthodontist without seeing a general dentist first. Most orthodontic clinics welcome direct appointments and offer complimentary initial consultations to evaluate your smile and discuss treatment options.
Is an orthodontist more expensive than a dentist?
Yes, an orthodontist is generally more expensive than a general dentist. This higher cost is due to their two-to-three years of specialized residency training focused specifically on bite correction and tooth alignment, allowing them to manage highly complex cases using advanced diagnostic technology.
Is it better to get braces from a dentist or orthodontist?
It is better to get braces from an orthodontist. While general dentists are legally permitted to provide braces and clear aligners, orthodontists are dental specialists who complete an additional 2 to 3 years of rigorous, full-time residency training specifically focused on tooth movement and jaw alignment.
Am I too old for orthodontics?
No upper age limit exists for braces. Orthodontic treatment depends on the health of your teeth, gums, and bone, not your age. Adults of any age, even into their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond, can benefit from orthodontic care when their oral health allows.
What usually happens at your first orthodontist appointment?
During this time, we’ll get to know you, your goals, your concerns, and what you’d love to change about your smile. We’ll also review your dental and medical history so we have a complete picture before making any recommendations. Your first orthodontic appointment is about you, not rushing you into treatment.
